The short answer
- Cloud VoIP PBX logs provide SIP codes that prove exact ring duration and caller abandonment.
- Mobile carrier billing records prove call connection attempts but cannot confirm ring time or missed status.
- Google permanently discontinued native Google Business Profile Call History on July 31, 2024.
- Starting October 1, 2026, Google Local Services Ads bills unanswered calls lasting over 20 seconds.
- Federal rule 47 CFR 42.6 requires carriers to retain toll billing records for 18 months.
Last month you paid $75 for a lead. Then nobody picked up.
By the end of this guide, you will be able to pull raw telecommunications records from your wireless carrier, VoIP system, and Google ads account to audit exactly how many calls your company missed last month.
What Call Records Can You Actually Pull?#
Every incoming call passes through three separate systems before a technician hears a ring. Each system records a different slice of data, and only one of them proves what happened on your end.
Under federal regulation 47 CFR 42.6, mobile carriers must retain basic toll billing records for 18 months. AT&T keeps Call Detail Records for up to 5 years, while Verizon retains call history for 7 years. These records show the caller's number, date, start time, and total connection time.
Carrier records stop at the network tower. If an incoming call rings your phone for 25 seconds and drops, the carrier log shows zero seconds or a short network setup time. A carrier record cannot prove whether a human answered, whether the call went to voicemail, or how many seconds the phone rang.
Cloud VoIP systems operate on application-layer Session Initiation Protocol logs. A cloud PBX records exact call states:
- SIP 180 and SIP 183: Marks the exact second the destination device started ringing.
- SIP 200 OK: Proves a live connection was established.
- SIP 487: Proves the caller hung up before anyone answered.
- SIP 486: Logs a busy line signal.
If you need to prove how long a customer waited before hanging up, VoIP PBX logs are the only records that provide defensible proof.
| Telecommunications Channel | Standard Retention Window | Ring Duration Tracking | Answer Verification Method |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mobile Carrier (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile) | 18 months statutory baseline; 5–7 years commercial logs | No (conflates setup with airtime) | None (cannot separate human from voicemail) |
| Cloud VoIP (RingCentral, Nextiva, ITSPs) | Account duration plus 4 years under proposed FCC rules | Yes (exact seconds via SIP signaling) | Yes (verified via SIP 200 OK and RTP audio) |
| Google Local Services Ads (LSA) | 60–90 days in dashboard | Partial (measures total switchboard duration) | No (unanswered calls >20s billed as valid leads) |
Google platforms handle call tracking differently. Google Business Profile Call History was permanently shut down on July 31, 2024. You cannot retrieve native call history from your organic Google profile.
Google Local Services Ads uses forwarding numbers that log ad calls. Starting October 1, 2026, Google bills for unanswered calls during business hours if the caller stays on the line longer than 20 seconds.
Unanswered Google LSA calls ringing over 20 seconds during business hours are billed as valid leads.

Deconstructing the Industry Statistics#
Software vendors frequently quote dramatic missed call figures to sell answering software. When you trace these numbers to their original studies, the data tells a different story.
Many marketing blogs claim that 62% of calls to small businesses go unanswered. That number comes from a 2016 study by 411 Locals that tracked 85 businesses across 58 unrelated industries for 30 days. The researchers counted voicemail (37.8%) and no-answer (24.3%) together to get 62.1%. The sample included retail shops, lacked call duration filters, and mixed automated robocalls with real customer inquiries.
The widely repeated claim that 85% of missed callers never call back has no verifiable primary dataset. It appears across vendor marketing pages as a general assertion, treating an emergency water leak the same as a routine quote inquiry.
A more rigorous dataset comes from the Invoca Lead Conversion Benchmarks Report, which evaluated over 70,000,000 call records across multiple industries. Invoca filtered out calls under 15 seconds to remove misdials and spam dialers.
In that filtered dataset, home service companies missed an average of 27% of their qualified inbound calls.
Invoca filters out calls under 15 seconds to exclude automated robocalls and misdials.
Vendors also claim each missed call costs a contractor $1,200 in lost revenue. That model assumes every missed call is a high-ticket system replacement. In contrast, a 2025 study by AMBS Call Center measured the direct transactional cost of a missed small business call at $12.15 based on routine administrative overhead and standard service margins.
The truth sits between those two figures: missing a furnace replacement costs thousands, while missing a routine maintenance inquiry costs far less.

The Math of Intake Labor and Ad Exposure#
Hiring an in-house dispatcher costs real money. Letting ad calls ring out costs money too.
According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics May 2023 survey for NAICS 238220 (Plumbing, Heating, and Air-Conditioning Contractors), dispatchers earn an annual mean wage of $46,800, or $22.50 per hour.
Plumbers earn a mean wage of $32.97 per hour ($68,570 annually). HVAC technicians earn a mean wage of $28.09 per hour ($58,430 annually).
When you include payroll taxes, insurance, and benefits, a dedicated dispatcher carries a 1.35x labor multiplier:
$22.50 base wage x 1.35 multiplier = $30.38 fully burdened hourly cost.
Over an average month of 173.33 working hours, one full-time dispatcher costs $5,265.77.
Now look at the risk of running Google Local Services Ads without dedicated intake under the October 1, 2026 rules. If your shop averages an LSA cost of $75 per lead and misses 3 ad calls per day that ring past 20 seconds:
3 missed calls x $75 cost per lead = $225 daily ad waste.
$225 daily waste x 22 working days = $4,950 monthly ad exposure.
You lose $4,950 in ad spend without booking a single job. Pulling field technicians off active jobs to answer phones creates a different problem: stopping a $32.97 per hour plumber on a job site disrupts billable work.
How to Audit Your Last Month of Calls#
You can audit your true missed call volume directly from your existing service portals without buying extra tracking software.
Step 1: Export Your Raw VoIP Records#
Log into your cloud VoIP administrative portal (such as RingCentral or Nextiva). Navigate to reports and export the last 30 days of Call Detail Records as a CSV file.
Open the file and apply three filters:
- Filter direction to inbound calls only.
- Filter disposition to unassisted states:
No Answer,Abandoned,Voicemail, orSIP 487. - Filter out all calls shorter than 10 seconds to remove instant hang-ups and automated robocalls.
Divide your filtered unassisted calls by your total filtered inbound calls to calculate your true missed call percentage.
Step 2: Reconcile Against Google LSA Billing Logs#
Download your monthly billing log from the Google Local Services Ads dashboard. Match timestamps and caller phone numbers against your VoIP export.
Check for any call where Google charged you for a call over 20 seconds that your PBX shows as abandoned or unanswered.
Add an IVR key-press menu to your ad routing so the 20-second billable timer only starts after a caller presses a key.
Under Google policy rules, if an ad call passes through an IVR key-press menu (such as "Press 1 for Dispatch") and the caller hangs up before pressing a key, Google does not assess a lead fee. If you were billed for an abandoned call prior to a key press, submit your VoIP SIP log to Google support to request a billing credit.
Frequently asked
Can my mobile carrier prove a customer hung up before I answered?
No. Mobile carrier Call Detail Records log connection timestamps and total session duration. They do not record handset ring duration, internal extensions, or whether an unanswered call was disconnected by the caller or routed to carrier voicemail.
How do VoIP logs prove a call was actually missed?
VoIP platforms record SIP response codes. A SIP 487 code confirms the caller disconnected before answer, while the timestamp between SIP 180 and termination proves the exact number of seconds the phone rang before abandonment.
Can I check missed calls in Google Business Profile?
No. Google permanently shut down Google Business Profile Call History on July 31, 2024. Native missed call logs and caller ID reports are no longer available in the dashboard without third-party call-tracking software.
Does Google Local Services Ads charge for missed calls?
Yes. Effective October 1, 2026, Google bills unanswered calls during declared business hours if the caller remains on the line past 20 seconds. An IVR key-press requirement delays the start of this 20-second timer.
The FIRSTCALL team — Call handling for home-service contractors
We run the answering service this research is about. Our own line takes live calls from HVAC and plumbing customers every day, including right now on (314) 784-8835. That is why these pieces separate what the published studies actually measured from what the industry repeats about them.
